This area was born in 1860 at the reunion of two cities: Grenelle and Vaugirard.
Grenelle was essentially a new town while industrial Vaugirard was a village of peasants who have known wars, famines and had built houses for Parisians. Despite, the influx of Parisians, Vaugirard had retained and its rural aspect. The reunion of the two cities because of a district following a rich industrial past, arts, crafts, science and religion.
